Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The origin of Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger, along with 10,000 Black Union troops, arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. This was two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in the Confederate states.
Although Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th, festivities often begin on June 15th and continue through the week, honoring the freedom, history, and resilience of African Americans. This day is not only a celebration of liberation but also a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey towards equality and justice. At the Georgia Black Expo (GBE), we’re honoring Juneteenth by highlighting how we can engage in activities aligned with our core pillars: Health & Wellness, Business & Commerce, Wealth & Finance, Education & Learning, Political & Civic Engagement, Arts & Entertainment, and Technology & Innovation.
